Best rate, cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate Settings
The three rate cvars plus ex_interp decide how smooth and how accurate your connection feels. Here are values that make sense, what they actually do, and why the server can override them.
Fix: sv_maxrate / sv_maxupdaterate Settings Ignored
Why your sv_maxrate and sv_maxupdaterate seem to have no effect, which of these cvars need ReHLDS/ReGameDLL, the min/max interplay, and how to confirm clients actually get the rate.
Fix: Players Show Choke and Loss on the Scoreboard
Choke and loss look similar but have opposite causes: choke is your server hitting a rate cap, loss is real packet loss. How to tell them apart with net_graph and fix each.
sv_maxrate, sv_maxupdaterate and sv_minupdaterate: Correct Values
The server-side rate cvars are a ceiling on what every client is allowed to use. Set them wrong and you either choke good connections or invite abuse. Here are the values that make sense.
Eliminating Choke on Your Server (sv_maxupdaterate Math)
What choke actually is, the exact relationship between cl_updaterate, sv_maxupdaterate, sv_maxrate and server fps, and the config that stops the yellow "choke" line on net_graph.
